Yoga is for every body (Part 2)
As an Iyengar teacher, I strive to create a welcoming and comfortable space in my classes for every person regardless of physical ability, skin color, sexuality, gender, age, culture, or religion.
[One of my favorite tees for yoga practice, from AmeYoga.]
One aspect of yoga being for every body is the inclusivity of the class. I am well aware that, being white and cis, I can’t fully appreciate the fear and discomfort that many feel when entering a space where they may be perceived as other. I fully embrace the challenge of providing a class setting that welcomes, nurtures, and supports all.
Iyengar yoga lends itself to inclusivity – this is not the sort of yoga where practitioners show up to show off their bodies. Students typically dress in clothes that allow comfortable movement and inversion (going upside down). In an Iyengar class, we are all fully engaged in developing the subtle actions needed in our own bodies to achieve alignment in asana. The class atmosphere is neither competitive nor judgmental.
