Level 1: Friday 5:30-6:45pm
Level 1 classes are a good choice for beginners and those who want to continue working on the foundational asanas. Students learn the Sanskrit names of asanas, learn how to modify or use props to make poses accessible to their individual bodies, and expand their repertoire of asanas across all categories (standing, forward extension, twisting, arm balancing, inversions, abdominal, back extension, and restorative). Regular attendance in these classes develops mobility, stability, and strength and introduces students to the mental involvement needed for a strong, intelligent yoga practice. Appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.
Level 2: Saturday 9:00-10:30am
Level 2 classes are appropriate for advanced students who have been regularly taking Level 1 or Level 1-2 classes for at least 1 year and are ready to take on more physically and mentally challenging asanas. To participate fully in Level 2 classes, students must have learned the Sanskrit names of fundamental asanas, feel deeply familiar with the foundational standing poses, hold Salamba Sarvangasana and Salamba Sirsasana for at least 5 minutes (or know the alternatives when these poses are not appropriate for individual reasons), and maintain a consistent, self-directed home practice. Level 2 students are expected to work with arm balances and pushing up into Urdhva Dhanurasana. In these advanced classes, basic actions are refined, taking students into a deeper understanding of the asanas, both physically and mentally. More challenging poses and variations are introduced, the classes are faster-paced, and students hold asanas for longer periods of time. In advanced classes, students develop greater sensitivity, body awareness, and mental focus. *I teach this class about twice per month, alternating with CIYT Martha Richardson.
